Do You Have an Albino Gorilla on Your Back?

Mutated monster beasts are headed toward Chicago and only one studly man can stop them.  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays our hero in Rampage. He’s the strong sarcastic type that prefers the company of gorillas to humans.  The Rock (I don’t bother to pretend he’s somebody else in movies) explains that years of military service gave him a front row seat to the horrific tendencies of man, hence a large white gorilla named George is The Rock’s only trusted ally.

In life we will face times of crisis, whether it be an ancient crocodile monster or a dead car battery when you’re late for work.  Can I turn to anybody for help?  The Rock is right – people have a natural propensity towards evil:

Genesis 6:5 (KJV)

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

No one in the human race  manages to ignore the evil whisper to rebel against God, but does that mean we give up on people?  The Rock is missing 3 concepts: God’s faithfulness, our role as light in a dark world and the call to forgive those that sin against us.

Your Best Friend Should be Jesus

The only friend that will never let you down is Jesus.  He saves us from our sin, which only He can do.  Don’t be deceived into believing that people or animals can save you from your troubles.

Psalm 146:3 (NIV)

Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.

Proverbs 18:24 (NIV)

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Light in the Darkness

It sure would be easier if we could turn our back on this sin-saturated world, but that’s not what God asks us to do.

1 Corinthians 5:9-11 (NIV)

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people—  not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters.  In that case you would have to leave this world.  But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler.

The Apostle Paul explains that we would have to leave the planet in order to avoid sinful people!  This caution speaks to discernment about avoiding Christian fellowship that’s failing to honor God, not the lost.

Ephesians 5:8 (NIV)

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.

A Call to Forgive

Living in community is a part of God’s plan for us.  Since we’re all sinners, we need to practice forgiveness.

Colossians 3:13 (NIV)

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

If you can’t forgive people you’ll end up with an enormous monkey as your friend … and you don’t want to carry that load around on your back.
