Laura Croft is back at it: Jumping great distances, climbing falling rocks, and solving ancient Japanese Rubik’s Cubes. The re-launch of the video game classic sends viewers around the globe to determine if a supernatural evil is buried in the earth or if it is just mythical hogwash.
These adventures are always taxing and you are bound to bump into a booby traps! Cue the collapsing floor and human impaling spikes. As luck (or the ancient architects) would have it, there are secret rocks in various shapes hidden about so you can place them in the keyhole. In just such a moment we find an odd message…one that is so quick if you blink you would miss it.
As Laura’s desperate crew members toss her glowing keys one is a cross. A glowing white cross.
The other keys failed and received little or no commentary, yet Laura took precious seconds to say, “It doesn’t work”. Skip to 2:11 to see what I’m talking about…
I don’t believe in mistakes, not even in Hollyweird. I suspect everything is intentional. It’s just another anti-God message slipped into our media without trumpets, without bells, yet the poison settles at the bottom of our cup.
What makes this occurrence especially odd is the conclusion of Laura Croft’s expedition. There is no supernatural witch, simply an ancient flesh eating virus (that eats bad guys faster than good guys). Sure, there are nasty-wasty viruses in the world but there is supernatural evil, and, thankfully, supernatural good.
Amid all this treasure hunting there’s really only one tomb that matters, it’s the empty tomb of Jesus. Actually, Joseph of Arimathea did Jesus a solid and donated it – but that’s not the point. Jesus really died, He died in our place for our sins. Jesus was really buried in a tomb, but He didn’t stay there in spite of the local authorities attempts to keep it that way.
Matthew 27:62-66 (NLT)
The next day, on the Sabbath, the leading priests and Pharisees went to see Pilate. They told him, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver once said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise from the dead.’ So we request that you seal the tomb until the third day. This will prevent his disciples from coming and stealing his body and then telling everyone he was raised from the dead! If that happens, we’ll be worse off than we were at first.”
Pilate replied, “Take guards and secure it the best you can.” So they sealed the tomb and posted guards to protect it.
Scoffers today try to keep Jesus in the tomb. It simply violates our sin-tainted minds. Life comes and goes and evolves (sarcasm), but when it ends it ends…right?
If Laura Croft found the empty tomb, would she be able to see her need for a supernatural Savior. Would she see the empty tomb as full of opportunity for faith? Can we?
1 Corinthians 15:55-57 (NLT)
O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
