It’s in a Christmas song, so it has to be true right?
“We three kings of Orient are,
Bearing gifts we traverse afar…”
I’m singing it and my neighbor’s nativity has 3 Wise Men so that settles it. Or does it?
The Bible is silent on the matter. What we know is 3 gifts were given and that’s why many assume there were 3 Wise Men.
Matthew 2:11 (NLT)
They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Could be more, could be less. We don’t know the exact number of Wise Men, but it doesn’t matter. They’re just window dressing; the main even is Jesus. The Savior had entered the world to redeem it!
Three applies to the Trinity, and a number of other things, but we’ll just have wonder as we wander about the exact number of kings that visited Jesus.
Maybe 3 doesn’t number the kings, but according to Schoolhouse Rock, magical qualities abide in the number 3…
