The Universe Doesn’t Need Thanos

So a large purple character is bent on killing half of the Earth’s population to restore balance to an overcrowded planet, increasing the quality of life for those who survive. No, it’s not Barney singing us into a murderous insanity…it’s a jewelry obsessed villain named Thanos. He won’t be singing any sweet love songs…

In Avengers: Infinity War Thanos is collecting powerful stones that will help him kill a lot of people. Murdering most of the universe is what needs to happen for Thanos to enjoy early retirement on the beach (not kidding). For some reason the giant chinned Thanos carries the burden of keeping the universe underpopulated and until then, he can’t relax.

There are two points that may have Thanos looking for a new career.

  • God commands mankind to fill the Earth.
  • The world’s population is stagnating.

Be Fruitful and Multiply

After creating Adam and Eve, God blessed them and sent them to populate the Earth.

Genesis 1:28 (ESV)

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Unfortunately humans are easily deceived and sin entered the world. The flood came and after the waters receded, God issued another blessing to Noah’s house.

Genesis 9:1 (ESV)

And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

It’s clear. God wants the Earth full of people. Thanos is powerful but he doesn’t match up with God.

The World Isn’t Overpopulated

Even if Thanos doesn’t fear God, the numbers don’t support his job description.

What I’m about to tell you may shake-up your worldview. Most of the world’s countries are struggling to re-populate and are actually shrinking. But don’t take my word for it, Joel Kotkin from Forbes says the following:

“For most of recent history, the world has worried about the curse of overpopulation. But in many countries, the problem may soon be too few people, and of those, too many old ones. In 1995 only one country, Italy, had more people over 65 than under 15; today there are 30 and by 2020 that number will hit 35. Demographers estimate that global population growth will end this century.”

It’s Clear

God has blessed us and the experts have spoken, the world needs to be filled and population growth doesn’t need to be restricted. Thanos needs a new job!
